========================
Hiking Istanbul – a book of hikes in the Istanbul region
We are three long-time Istanbullers working on a book of hikes in Istanbul’s hinterland – at the moment there isn’t such a book, which already says a lot. The book will be in Turkish and English versions. Caroline is an Ottoman historian and co-creator of the Evliya Çelebi Way long-distance bridle path (the only such in Turkey). Nick is a performer, concert promoter and mountaineer. Suha is a master of mapping, navigation and all things geoinformatic. We are all keen hikers.
The idea for the book was sparked by Serkan Taycan’s Canal Walk project for last year’s Istanbul Biennial, and is a response to the Government’s attempt to build on Gezi Park, and how extraordinarily little value is given to public land and public access in Turkey (Istanbul has amongst the lowest percentage of green space of any European city, with many hotels and other constructions built on land which was once parks or cemeteries). If trails and paths are not used, if the land around Istanbul is not appreciated and not used for recreation (which means literally the process of re-creating, of renewal), then who can complain about it being destroyed one day in the name of ‘development’?
A process which has been going on for a long time, and accelerating under the obsession with economic ‘progress’ (to whit the Prime Minister’s recent comment “Everything can be sacrificed for roads, because roads are civilisation. Those who are not civilised do not know the value of roads. In our values, roads do not recognise any obstacle”.), so instead of a green belt of sacred, protected land around Istanbul, we have space which has negligible value (it’s just the space you pass through on your way to somewhere else), and only is regarded as having value if it’s turned into motorways, canals, airports, and the urban sprawl which fills in the once-green spaces between the megaprojects.
Our book will also be an extension of Kate Clow’s extraordinary work in creating long-distance hiking trails in Anatolia.
The concepts for our book include that the hikes should be accessible by public transport from Istanbul (not dependent on private cars), that they should be interesting from a mixture of aesthetic, historical, geological and biological perspectives as well as physically engaging. The hikes should be serious – they should take the best part of a day to complete, and some of them will be linkable so that they can be combined into longer hikes of more than a day (though the idea is not to have to carry camping gear). We’re interested in working with collaborators on different phases of the project, and we’d be interested in fellow-hikers joining us as they wish as we explore Istanbul’s hinterland. If you’re interested or know people who are, please get in touch or put them in touch. If you just wish to be kept informed without being actively involved at this stage, please also let us know. And if you have suggestions for hikes around Istanbul which would fit (more or less) the brief, then please do let us know. Please contact us in Turkish or English for more information if interested in any aspect of the above.Nick Hobbs, Caroline Finkel and Suha ÜlgenContact: via facebook or info@hikingistanbul.orgMore info:

Hello! My name is Ana María.
I would like to know about the price of the hiking for this Saturday (16th).
Thank you in advanced.

hi Nick
A couple of weeks ago I contacted you via facebook but I like to communicate via email.
I am a photographer from the Netherlands.
In may this year I was in Istanbul for a week to work on a photoproject. Two days I could go with a chauffeur to the periphery of Istanbul near the area of Durusu.
Inspired by the project of the Turkish artist Serkan Taycan who made a beautiful project Between two Seas, a hiking path of 60 km, I focussed on making portraits of young ones, teenagers. I felt the time I spend there was too short that’s why i want to go back maybe in september or october for a week.
Because it’s not for a long period I want to use my time efficient. By scrolling on the internet I found your website/facebook. After reading your hiking stories and seeing such beautiful images of the area I like to get in touch with you.
When I go back I want to travel around, driving or hiking..focus on the authenticity of some little villages and nature and especially the people/young generation who live there. My question is if you could help me because you know this area and it’s people and another important thing is that you speak English! It would be nice if we could communicate or even beter we could meet when I am there…
I hope to hear from you,
kind regards,
Louise

Re: Osman’s Dream – Dear Ms Finkel,
Please note: the above mentioned book, which you have written and published, is excruciatingly difficult to read. It is so badly printed in fact that a copy which I have recently purchased via Amazon had to be returned.
The paper is of very poor substance and the ink printed on it of even lesser quality!
The literary content aside, for I did not even get that far, pitching the price for your work at £16.00 plus on average, I would expect a comparable balance of value expressed in quality paper and print.
After all what is the point of purchasing a book if it is a displeasure to read. A displeasure that would be 700 pages long.
Having returned the copy I purchased from Amazon, on those grounds, I am making a second attempt to purchase another copy from Waterstone’s, I contacted the bookshop in advance to my purchase in order to ascertain if the copies they are holding are printed in sufficient quality to be read. I am waiting to hear.
I have written to you, thinking that perhaps you are not aware of these issues? And that perhaps if you are not, you may wish to rectify these with your publisher. For I am sure, that I am not the only purchaser who will reject your publication on the grounds which I have mentioned.
A pity indeed, your efforts in researching and writing the book deserve better. By raising and bringing this issue to your attention, I hope to have done you a small service.
I am still hopeful of finding a readable copy.
Yours sincerely,
Joe Sedlmaier

Hi – I was thinking of visiting Turkey in early March because I have some time free, and wanted to do some hiking too. Originally I thought of going to Trabzon and trying to hike there, but it looks like the weather is a bit iffy that time of year. I’d like maybe to visit Istanbul, dates probably 8-17 March. I’d love to fit in some hiking. Has your group made any plans that far ahead? I’d like to have company (and a guide), if possible. I’d love to hear from you.
sorry I missed this I think
